Tesla has updated its “Full Self-Driving (Supervised Mode)” feature, introducing a new driving mode called “Mad Max.” This mode represents the highest level of aggressive driving settings, allowing drivers to travel at higher speeds even if it means exceeding speed limits or making rapid lane changes. The previously highest setting, “Accelerate Mode,” has now been downgraded to the second tier. The current full list of modes includes: Mad Max, Accelerate, Standard, Relaxed, and Lazy.
This isn't Tesla's first time introducing such a mode, whose name originates from a renowned post-apocalyptic film series known for its aggressive driving style. The company previously launched “Mad Max Mode” as part of its Full Self-Driving (FSD) system, but the naming sparked controversy.
Mad Max Mode first debuted in 2018 during the early rollout of Tesla's Autopilot feature (the predecessor to Full Self-Driving, or FSD). At the time, CEO Elon Musk described the feature as more proactive in lane changes and navigating complex road conditions, specifically mentioning Los Angeles traffic.
Currently, this mode is only available to early access testers. The current iteration of Mad Max Mode enables more decisive driving decisions when navigating through traffic and delivers more aggressive acceleration performance. Based on preliminary user feedback from forums and social media, the current top speed can reach 85 mph (approximately 137 km/h).
Many Tesla enthusiasts who have received the update appear to appreciate the enhanced speed and power, noting a significant reduction in frustration during everyday driving scenarios. This advancement is also seen as a major breakthrough in Tesla's autonomous driving vision, indicating increased confidence in its decision-making systems and reduced reliance on human drivers. The mode has been described as “like a sports car.”
This new feature is currently unavailable in India, as Tesla has not yet rolled out its Full Self-Driving capability locally—though the feature remains purchasable and may be included in Model Y orders for future activation.
